  • The myth of hormones in chickens

One of the biggest myths that still persist in the minds of most Brazilians is that the chickens in the country are bred with the use of hormones. This, according to legend, would explain the fast development of these birds, making the consumption of Brazilian chicken unwise.
In fact, the growth of chicken meat production in Brazil is the result of a revolution that occurred in our poultry industry in recent decades, and that brought the country to the present condition of largest exporter and third largest producer in the world.
The myth of the presence of hormones in chickens in Brazil does not have any technical or scientific facts proven by credible sources of known base. But the arguments which prove that these substances are not used in our poultry do. Please, check this myth-busting information below:

    There are four factors:
    - Genetics: What makes you have light or dark hair, skin and eyes? The genetic characteristics of your family. The same happens with animals. The natural crossbreed of different dog breeds results in an offspring which presents characteristics similar to those of the parents. The same occurs with chickens and animals of other domestic species. The natural selection of genetic traits from parents is what will determine how the descendant will be and, of course, at the time of selection, animals with better weight gain are chosen. In Brazil, the genetic development of lineages by means of this selection has been carried out for decades.
    - Ambience: This technical term means optimal environmental conditions for animals. Proper temperature, ventilation and lighting contribute to a better growth of the birds. To compare, it is as if you lived in totally favorable conditions for your health - without sharp fluctuations in temperature that could cause colds and the flu.
    - Nutrition: "Chickens have a more balanced diet than the human being", advocate various professionals in the veterinary and zootechnical sectors. This occurs because the whole breeding diet is "millimetrically" balanced with the physiological needs of the animal, ensuring efficient health and performance.
    - Hygiene and Sanitation: Modern poultry industry demands total hygienic and sanitary control. As a result, the birds offered to the market are completely healthy.

    - According to the National Plan for Control of Residues and Contaminants in Animal Products (PNCRC) from the Ministry of Agriculture, in the last four years (until 2011), more than 2.8 thousand analyzes were performed in chickens, in which there was no evidence of the use of these substances in chicken meat.
    - In Brazil, the application of any type of hormonal substances in livestock is prohibited by law. There is a strict supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply on the use of nutrients and additives on animal feeds. The poultry industry alone consumes about 32 million tons of feed/year. Thus, it is impossible, because of this volume of feed consumed, not to detect irregularities at some point.
    - Considering it is prohibited to use hormones in birds, their inclusion would make the Brazilian production irregular, which would make it impossible to Brazil to be the 3rd largest producer and largest exporter, selling to more than 150 countries and exporting nearly 4 million tons. Over 4.5 million direct and indirect jobs are generated out of this sector, with participation in 1.5% of Brazilian GDP.
    - Brazil produces over 6 billion chickens per year. If hormone were to be used the consumption would be on a large scale. How could a black market supply the industries with such products considering that not even one single cargo has been apprehended until this day? Or even companies (customer/supplier) being caught storing this type of product in their establishments?
    - Today chicken is the most consumed meat in Brazil. This represents more than 47 kg/capita/year (compared to almost 40 kg of beef and 15 kg of pork meat). Brazil is the world leader in chicken export and works with demanding markets such as Japan and the European Union. Why would a sector which employs five million people (directly and indirectly) put all this at risk?
    - There are still several other reasons. A simple and practical one is that there is not enough time during the chicken breeding for the hormone to take effect. The production cycle of the chicken takes approximately 42 days, while the synthetic substance takes at least 60 days to present some results. This is economically unviable!
    - Who is interested in denigrating the image of poultry meat and products, which accounted for the strongest growth in the consumption of protein in the world in the last 30 years?
    - Why have the international authorities never raised a "serious public health problem"? The answer is simple: it does not exist.

Do not believe or change your habits due to any lie or myth without foundation. The ones who create e-mails with false information have a single goal which is to harm you. The real cancer is the untruth.

Chicken is an extremely healthy and inexpensive product. It is mandatory in every balanced diet for being tasty, nutritious and for having low rates of fat - unlike other foods. It is so healthy that it plays the role of protagonist even in hospital diets.
Therefore, if you are tired of so many lies going over the internet, pass this truth on and enlighten your friends.
